Behind three first half goals, Bishop Carroll outlasted a tough Maize team in a rematch of last year's 5A state third place game 3-2.
Maize was on the attack early for much of Thursday's match, with Carroll keeper Madison Wingler on top of her game until Marissa Llamas broke through, with Wingler unable to corral a loose ball and Llamas having a wide open look at the net.
It didn't take long for the Golden Eagles to answer, taking advantage of a free kick with Sarah Brittain scoring on a second effort to level the match at 1.
Two minutes later, Khloe Schuckman used her speed to kick the ball out of the grasp of Maize keeper Riley Quiggle, connecting on the open look as Carroll took the 2-1 lead. Right before half, the Golden Eagles added a third on a corner kick with Jadyn Allen heading in a perfectly placed kick from Paige Stranghoner.
Then after halftime it was a mostly even first twenty minutes until Maize broke through, coming within a goal of the Golden Eagles and remaining on the attack through the final buzzer, but were unable to get the equalizer in falling 3-2.
Carroll improves to 13-1 with the win, keeping pace with McPherson at the top of the 5A standings. Maize falls to 9-3-1 with the defeat, finishing their regular season with three games in the season's final week.
