Campus boys get season sweep over Derby to win AVCTL D1 title

DERBY, Kan.--- The last time these two rivals [Campus and Derby] played each other back in January, it came down to a three point game. The Colts remain undefeated and had a lot on the line against Derby. Coach Davis says he and his guys were never nervous though. The Colts pulled out the 62-54 win over the Panthers.

"I told them all week I though it'd be a one or two possession game, that's how a rivalry is and they're good, they're really good," said Campus head coach Chris Davis. "I never really felt threatened but made just enough plays down the stretch to keep them at arm's length."

"We just kept our same intensity. We've been in plenty of fights like that so we just basically stayed with it and kept going," said Campus senior Steele Chapman.

Campus senior Shawn Warrior said, "Our defense is looking a lot better. How we switched up from man to zone."

"I've got trust in those guys from what we've been through," said Davis. "It's the first league championship that Campus has ever won, so it was a big time game in a tough atmosphere and I'm proud as heck of them."

"We just come with the same intensity that we keep bringing and just keep playing hard, that's what we got to do, just keep playing hard defensive wise and then offensively it's going to come to us," said Chapman.

Warrior said, "We have this thing where we just bond together, just talk to each other and we get it done."

Getting this big AVCTL win with only a couple more games to play in the regular season against teams with losing records, Campus is sitting pretty secure at the top of the 6A boys standings.

Campus will head to Goddard while Derby travels to Blue Valley North West.
