Buzzer beater lifts Little River girls over Ness City

GREAT BEND, Kan. The Little River Lady Redskins made a basket as time expired in overtime to claim third place at the 2020 Hilltop Hoops Classic over the Ness City Lady Eagles, 33-31.

The teams came into the game with this being their third contest since Tuesday.

For most of the game the two teams kept the score close. Little River had the largest lead by seven points at two minutes left in the second quarter.

Ness City trailed by six, 20 to 14, going into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half the Lady Eagles held Little River to just nine points. This gave them the opportunity to retake the lead at 2:40 remaining in the regulation.

A made free throw by Little River at close to one minute left tied the game at 29 all.

Little River had the ball with four second left in the fourth quarter. Head Coach Trey Look took a timeout. The play he drew up came up short and the game went to overtime.

For the third year in a row, Ness City would play an overtime game at the Hilltop Hoops Classic.

Ness City made a basket halfway through the extra period. Little River quickly equalized.

Again, with thirty seconds left, the Lady Redskins possessed the ball. Coach Look to a timeout at nine seconds remaining. "I drew up a play that did not work. Fortunately Emma McBride was there to put a shot in and win the game."

McBride's shot fell into the basket after bouncing around as the buzzer sounded. Little River won by two points.

"Emma is probably our smartest basketball IQ player," said Coach Look. "She took a fantastic left handed shot that went in."

Lily Boughfman of Little River lead all scorers with 12 points. Emma McBride added 11 points.

Alexa Reinhardt led Ness City scorers with 11 points.
