Blue Valley West wins 6A Swim Title; Wichita East's Bell Shines

TOPEKA, Kan. - Narrowly edging crosstown rival Blue Valley North, Blue Valley West took home the 2019 6A Boys Swim Title by just 2.5 points.

BV West finished with 280.5 points to edge BV North's 278 and win the championship. Shawnee Mission East, who entered the meet having won 4 consecutive state titles, finished in third place.

Additionally, the Jaguars' Jonah Park was named swimmer of the meet, taking home first place finishes in both the 200 & 500 freestyle.

In the CIK area, Wichita East finished in 6th place overall to lead the way. East was paced by Drayden Bell, who earned first team all-state honors as just a freshman. Bell took first place in the 50 freestyle, finishing in a personal best time of 20.73 seconds. Bell also took home a second place finish both the 100 freestyle and 200 medley relay, and third in the 400 freestyle relay.

His teammates in both relays, Sam Hutchinson, Earl Hwang and Jason Ooten were each awarded second team all-state honors.

One other area swimmer earned first team all-state honors, Alec Lebeda of Wichita Southeast. Lebeda finished third in the 500 free and sixth in the 100 breaststroke.
