Bishop Carroll wins regional in memory of player's mother

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) -- Bishop Carroll advances past the regional round, defeating Salina Central handily 52-14.

Late in the first quarter, the public address announcer shouted, "now playing on defense, Paul Eck!" and the crowd erupted into cheer. It's not typical to announce starters when they enter the game.

After a big third down stop, where he swatted the ball away from a Mustang receiver, Eck jogged toward the sideline and the crowd cheered his name one more time. He raised his hand toward the home sideline, and a big smile came across his face with "M E" written across his cheekbones.

Eck was playing in memory of Margaret Eck, his late mother who lost her battle with cancer earlier this week. While everyone was preparing for the game earlier Friday, Paul Eck was burying his mother. Yet, somehow he was in great spirits.

"It means a lot to have my teammates here and all of my family in town," he said. All of the students dressed in yellow for my mom. Words can't explain what it means to me."

It also helped to advance past the regional round and see the sectionals for the second consecutive year. Next Friday, Eck and his Golden Eagle teammates will face off with Northwest at Northwest for a rematch with the Grizzlies.

Northwest won the first week matchup 23-22.
