To call the first half sluggish between Garden Plain and Independent might be an understatement. But the Owls more than made up for it, exploding for 18 straight points to start the third quarter en route to a big home win over Wichita Independent Tuesday.
Garden Plain opened the game on a 7-0 run, holding the Panthers scoreless for more than 5 minutes before allowing a three. That three was the lone bucket of the quarter for Independent, but the Owls lead by just 6, 9-3.
The second quarter was a reverse of the first. Independent slowly chipped away at the lead, holding the Owls to just two points in the second and closing the gap to 11-10 at the break.
But the third quarter proved to be the difference maker. The Owls couldn't miss, scoring 18 in a row and keeping the Panthers off the board until just 13 seconds remained in the frame, never looking back in a big 47-27 win.
It was a balanced effort to pull away, Brooke Hammond leading the way with 10 and Kennedy Horacek and Christia Rose Gorges each adding 9. Charlotte Taylor lead the way for Independent with 8 points.
The win moves Garden Plain to 14-4 on the season with two games to go, all but locking them into the number two seed at the Sedan sub-state in two weeks. The loss ends a five game win streak for the Panthers, dropping them to 12-6 on the season.
