HUTCHINSON, Kan. - All it took was one play for Andale to establish their dominance, taking the first snap from scrimmage 72 yards to the house and never looking back in a 35-7 win over Perry-Lecompton to capture the 3A State Championship Saturday.
The win for Andale is the culmination of a perfect 13-0 season, winning their first title since 2014 and fourth in school history.
Returning from injury, Eli Rowland got the handoff on his own 28 yard line and turning up the sideline, shaking off a would-be tackler before crossing the goal line and giving Andale a 7-0 lead just 13 seconds into the game.
The teams traded punts for much of the first half until the late in the second half when what appeared to be a huge Perry-Lecompton stop turned on them in a flash.
A big run on first down set Andale up at the Kaw 38 yard line, but the very next play resulted in a sack of Easton Hunter, dropping him for a 16 yard loss.
But two plays later facing a 3rd and 26, Hunter hit Scottie Easter on a slant as he went from one sideline to the other, taking the pass 44 yards and putting Andale in goal to go situation.
it took Andale until fourth down to convert, but Hunter went over the top to make it a 14-0 game entering half.
Out of the break, the Andale defense came up with another stop, this time blocking the Kaw punt and turning the short field into a three yard Mac Brand score.
Following the wind causing an 11-yard Andale punt, the Kaws broke through for their first score of the day on a 21 yard pass, but Andale responded almost instantly.
Just one minute later, Hunter went deep to Cole Landers for a 60 yard touchdown pass to extend the lead back to 21, effectively ending any shot of a comeback.
Rowland added a second rushing score to push the lead to 35-7 as Andale completed the undefeated season.
