ANDALE, Kan. The Andale Indian defense continued to prove that it is going to be a tough unit to break in a 55-0 win over Wichita Collegiate Friday night. The last time the Indians were scored on was week one against Mulvane, Since then, Andale has outscored opponents 308-0.
Friday night against Collegiate would prove to be no different for Andale, making its presence known against the Spartans early and often.
The Indians struck first out of the gate when Scotti Easter took the opening kickoff back to the house seemingly untouched. From there the defense forced numerous three-and-outs, giving the ball to junior quarterback Easton Hunter and company. Hunter found the end zone easily on a designed quarterback run to keep the Indians in the driver seat.
The defense for the Indians proved to be too much for the Wichita Collegiate offense, who has only been held scoreless once this season prior to tonight.
When asked about the outcome of the game, Andale head coach Dylan Schmidt said he was not expecting the score but was pleased with the defensive effort.
"Number one it's having good athletes and the kids being coachable,” said Schmidt. “Coach [Tim] Fairchild and the rest of the defensive staff have obviously done a fabulous job putting in the work in the film room and always making sure we have a good game plan."
Two key plays by the defense each came by the way of interceptions. The first was by senior defensive back Ethan Baalmann, which stopped a Collegiate drive and led to more first quarter points for the Indians. Hunter added to the takeaway department with a 60-yard interception returned for a touchdown.
"The number one thing we stress is takeaways so it was nice to have that pick six, “echoed Schmidt. “The thing that stood out overall was how relentless our kids were and flying to the ball. It is fun to watch.”
With the win, Andale increases their lead in Division 4 of the AVCTL, They will continue their pursuit of perfection next week with a road game against Clearwater. Wichita Collegiate will look to jump back into the win column against Haven.
