MAIZE, Kan. The Nickerson baseball team had a day Tuesday they’ll never forget. After moving the 4A State Tournament to Tuesday in Maize, it was going to be a long road to a Panther state title.
It started around 11:00 am with a quarterfinal matchup with Tonganoxie, a game Nickerson won 6-5. The Panthers survived, despite giving up a 5-0 lead late in the game.
Up next, a semifinal game against Mulvane, who hadn’t played yet. Nickerson jumped out to a big lead, but Mulvane stormed back to tie the game at 6. Tanner Schrag, who had a key hit in the first win, walked it off with a single in the 7th, leading Nickerson to the 7-6 win.
Then, a weather delay, before Nickerson could get first pitch against Buhler at around 8:45 pm. Again, the Panthers jumped out to a big lead only to see the Crusaders come back. But Nickerson held on, and after 11 hours of baseball, and three games, the Panthers are your 4A State Champions. It’s their 5th ever state title, and their first since 2002.
The final out for Nickerson to clinch the state title, and a well deserved dogpile on top of senior pitcher @JohnnyHuggard who finishes out a complete game win when his team needed it most #CatchItKansas pic.twitter.com/xDAzeGgaEz— Matt Henderson (@KWCHMatt) May 29, 2019
