In a tightly contested matchup, Nick Bonner took over late, scoring the final eight points as Derby topped Maize 63-61 on the road.
It was a game of runs for the early parts of the game, with Maize streaking out to a 22-12 lead that Derby came back on, and Maize again going on a 10-1 run in the third, taking a 49-44 lead to the final quarter.
The Panthers chipped away from there, cutting the deficit to 52-51 before Maize extended the lead back to 4. Then with a chance to tie, Isaac Ray was fouled on a three pointer, hitting 2 of his 14 team high 14 points to cut it to a 56-55 game with under four minutes to play.
Then Bonner took over. Two free throws started things as Derby took their first lead, the first of 8 straight points leading to a 63-61 lead.
Maize turned the ball over twice in the final minute, but still had one final shot to tie or take the lead. With under four seconds to play, Winston Bing passed on a chance for the tie, stepping back to take an open look from the corner that rimmed out as the Eagles fell to the Panthers by two, 63-61.
Bonner finished the game with 10 while Tre Washington added 11. Maize was led by a game-high 22 points from Jacob Hanna.
Derby stays perfect with the win, moving to 4-0 on the season. The loss is the second of the year for Maize who sit at 2-2 with a tough road contest against top ranked Campus on the horizon for Thursday night.
