Marysville holds off Winfield for 4A Wrestling Championship
Winfield took the runner up trophy in the 2019 Class 4A Wrestling Championships on a day with a compressed schedule due to the threat of winter weather.
The KSHSAA decided to modify the schedule for the second day of the wrestling championships in Salina and Hays due to the impending winter storm. With the threat of heavy snowfall and strong winds creating blizzard conditions, all three medal matches for a weight class were held at the same time. Normally the third and fifth place matches would be held in one round and the championship matches would occur separately.
At the end of the first day Marysville held an 11 point lead over Scott City with 88 points to 77. Winfield stood in fourth with 67 points. Pratt followed at fifth with 62.
In weight class 106 pounds, Devon Weber of Pratt completed a perfect season. The sophomore finished the year 41-0 after defeating Chanute's Trent Clements by a 5-2 decision. Also of note in the class, Quentin Pauda of Ulysses finished in fourth place after dropping his match with Grayson Sonntag of Tonganoxie in a 3-1 decision.
For the 113 pound weight class, Braden Ledford of Winfield won a state championship over Abilene's William Stroda with a 2-1 decision. Rose Hill's Kyle Sackett took home fourth after loosing to Kolton Misener of Chanute 6-0. Corbyn Pauda of Ulysses took fifth place by pinning Chance Mitzner of Osawatomie.
In weight class 120 pounds, Andale's Hector Serratos claimed the state title in a 7-5 decision over Chadwick Stahl of Mulvane. Winfield's Chris Ray took sixth after being pinned by Issac Novotny of Marysville.
Chandler Schoenberger of Russell took fifth in weight class 126 pounds. He defeated Wamego's Drew Brown by technical fall with a score of 16-0.
The state championship in weight class 132 pounds went to Justus McDaniel of Scott Community. He won a 10-3 decision over Buhler's Adam Whitson.
In weight class 138 pounds, Kaden Wren of Scott Community took runner up. He lost a 10-6 decision to Frontenac's Riley McDaniel. McDaniel ended the season a perfect 38-0. Juan Urbina of Ulysses took home third place by pinning Jonny Crome of Marysville. Chance Price of Winfield won fifth place by winning a 10-6 decision over Buhler's Sam Elliott.
Clearwater's Darryl Rylant won the weight class 145 pounds state championship after a 4-1 decision over Mason Jameson of Frontenac. Nick Elliott of Buhler secured third place by a 5-4 decision over Chanute's Brady McDonald. In the fifth place match, Dawson Chavez of Andale defeated Theron Tucker of Scott Community with a pin fall.
Kadence Riner of Pratt won fifth place for 152 pounds by a 10-2 major decision over Bendan Ohlmeier of Paola.
In weight class 160 pounds, Jadon Koehler of Pratt took runner up after loosing a 10-1 major decision to Gavin Cullor of LaCygne-Prairie View. Rose Hill's David Leck won third by a 7-1 decision over Hunter Schroeder of Concordia. Kai Wernli of El Dorado came in sixth after loosing a 5-3 decision to Noah Ackerman of Marysville.
Wyatt Hayes won his second weight class 170 pound state championship. He defeated Storm Slupianek of Marysville in a 8-2 decision. This is Hayes' first 4A state title after taking the same weight class in 3-2-1A last year. Abilene's Dakotah Whiteley won third after a 7-0 decision over Grant Scheer of Rose Hill. Dax Hopp of Smoky Valley finished sixth after loosing a 5-1 decision to Hunter Boone of LaCygne-Prairie View.
In weight class 182 pounds, Owen Braungardt of Winfield defeated Brett Bober of Burlington by a 4-1 decision to take the state championship. Pratt's Caden Blankenship ended the tournament in fourth place loosing in a 9-7 decision to Konnor Tannahill of Holton.
For weight class 195 pounds, Dalton Harvey of Chapman took fifth place in a 6-2 decision over Sebastian Morrissey of Winfield.
El Dorado's Braden Morgan won weight class 220 pounds by a 15-0 technical fall over Zachery Ferris of Champman. Kenny Fehrman of Wellington took third with a 3-1 decision over Louisburg's Austin Moore. Scott Community's Kyle Sherwood took fifth after a 3-1 decision over Zach Phillips of Winfield.
Ayston Perez of Ulysses took third in weight class 285 pounds. He defeated Kyle Smith of Mulvane by pin fall. Andale's Ethan Shackelford took fifth place after a forfeit by Qualin Powell of Chanute.
When all the matches concluded, Marysville won the team title with 112.5 points. Winfield took second with 100 points. Scott Community took third with 92 team points. Pratt ended the tournament in fourth place with 86 points. Other teams of note is Ulysses ended the tournament in eighth at 74 points and Andale collecting tenth on 59 points.
