Andover Central tops Maize in gritty road victory
MAIZE, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Both Andover Central and Maize have new look teams for the 2023 season after losing plenty to graduation the year before, but after watching the Jaguars’ week two performance, it wouldn’t be apparent. After jumping out to an early 14-0 lead, the Jaguars were able to fend off the Maize comeback, winning 24-21.
The win was one full of grit for head coach Derek Tuttle’s team, as he says he learned a lot about the fight of his team early in the season.
“They’ve got a lot of heart,” he said. “Our kids had to face some really tough playmakers. Maize has a lot of kids that can catch the ball and run the ball in space and that was really challenging. Some of our guys made great plays.”
Andover Central now is off to a 2-0 start to the season, and they hope to defend it as they host Arkansas City back at home next week.
