Game of the Week: Northwest blows out Bishop Carroll in revenge game to open 2023 play
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Last year in week one, fans saw the Bishop Carroll Golden Eagles win by miraculous comeback to win their second straight over Steve Martin’s Wichita-Northwest squad. In 2023, it was a much different way for the Grizzlies to open the year taking down their rival 53-7.
After the all-angles offensive attack the Grizzlies brought in attacked quick scoring 17 points in the first quarter by way of a field goal and two rushing touchdowns by Northwest’s new dual-quarterback look of sophomore Jaylen Mason and senior Jayce Glasper.
After that, both sides of the Grizzlies stepped up huge outscoring the Golden Eagles for the final 40 minutes of the game 46-0.
Every coach wants to start off on the good foot in week one, but many more would love to have the start Northwest had to their season. The Grizzlies, though, say this wasn’t a surprise to anyone in their locker room.
“I feel like throughout our whole week at practice we had our mindset that nobody in the state can mess with us,” said Northwest senior running back Cencere Thompson said. “We’ve just got to play to our best abilities and nobody in the state can actually put up numbers with us.”
Now with talent at every level of Northwest, head coach Steve Martin said that this group is not only talented, but motivated to be the group that can take the Grizzlies to the next level.
“I’m very confident in these guys right now,” he said. “They have put a lot of work in this off-season and this summer. I mean the work that we’re asking them to do - I don’t know how most kids would handle that. We need to push this program over the hump and get to another level, and I think they’re hungry.”
The Grizzlies suit up next in another GWAL matchup as they hit the road to face Wichita Heights.
