GARDEN PLAIN, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - For a second straight season, the Garden Plain Owls found a way to shut down the Conway Springs offense and come out victorious, this year a 20-14 home win to open their 2023 campaign.

The Owls forced three turnovers, two first half fumbles and an interception in the third, leading to 13 of their points. They also shut down one of the state’s top rushers in Brayden Kunz, keeping him out of the endzone and under 100 yards for back to back matchups.

Garden Plain’s rushers stole the show offensively, rebounding from an opening drive fumble with a big second drive highlighted by runs from Emrick Hays and Pete McGregor. Hays found paydirt three times for all of the Owls scoring on the day. Both rushers combined to outgain the Cardinals and hit the century mark, Hays ending with 126 yards and McGregor 109.

Both teams will now head into difficult week two matchups next Friday night. The Owls are set to travel to Cheney while Conway Springs hosts Kingman.
