WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Many of the standouts that contributed to Bishop Carroll’s GWAL title in 2022 are back.

Behind senior quarterback and Air Force commit Jackson King, and a skill group that includes Luke Holthusen, Thomas Gorges and Van Haneberg, the Carroll offense has high expectations in 2023.

“This is the most veteran group of skill guys we’ve had in my 4 years here,” King said. “It’s definitely showing. We’re doing some special stuff on offense.”

Bishop Carroll went 7-3 a season ago, with six of those games being decided by one score. Now the Golden Eagles must replace nearly their full offensive and defensive lines in order to get through a tough schedule that includes Northwest, Derby, Kapaun, Junction City and East.

“We want out returners to be good leaders and lead those young guys,” head coach Dusty Trail said. “We need some young guys to step up if we want to get to where we want to go.”

The offensive line does return one of the best in the state in 6-foot-5 UNLV commit Hank Purvis.

“We lost four senior starters to our offense line. Watching practice today, I think we’re gonna be pretty good,” he said. “I think we’re all gaining that confidence. We were kinda worried coming into the season, but it’s coming along good.”

If everything comes together, he believes their traditional goals are more than attainable.

“State champions - what else do you want. I’ve got everything. I got the GWAL - we always want that. We always want to beat Kapaun. We always want to beat Northwest,” Purvis said. “I think we’re aiming for Derby this year, for sure, and a state championship.”
