The Catch it Kansas Countdown to Kickoff tour continues in Cheney where the Cardinals expect to make noise in Class 3A.

The Cardinals, for a fourth straight season, ended with 8 or more wins in reaching the state quarterfinals a year ago. That was with a team full of underclassmen that stepped up to replace a big senior class.

“The seniors did a good job and the underclassmen stepped up like we needed them to be as successful as we did, and those guys that stepped up are the ones that are back,” said coach Shelby Wehrman, “That’s why we have a lot more excitement—haven’t had a year like this for a long time where you’ve got such a good strong young group returning.”

The team carries 14 starters, led by seniors Jackson Voth, Kason Messenger, and Colter McDaniel.

“This team, everyone wants to win, everyone wants to be the best and I think this year in the summer everyone did what it takes to be the best, and we’re gonna carry that mentality throughout until we are the best,” said Voth, who is set to play for New Mexico State next year.

Cheney opens their season with a game at Kingman, a team that beat them a year ago in the season opener on their way to a state title game appearance.

“Two years in a row they put up 14-0 on us, they’re very well coached, they’re gonna be disciplined, its gonna be a dogfight ‘til the end. We just got to come out, hit them first, swing hard, be the better team,” added Voth.
