Week six of the track season proved to be the best one yet. Warmer temperatures meant a general reset of most times and marks, as indicated in the charts with May 2 and May 5 dates from Tuesday and Friday meets. Nowhere was that more accurate than the Shawnee Mission North Relays on Friday where two Kansas all-time bests were reset.

Prior to this season, no pole vaulter had cleared higher than 17-1 in 12 years. Andover Central junior Bryce Barkdull had already surpassed that, but Friday at the SM North Relays, he broke a 43-year-old state record by clearing the bar at 17-6.25.

Because the official one-mile run is not a state event, it is not tracked in our sheets. However, many of the state’s best were called to the SM North Relays in chase of the famed four-minute mile. Wichita Trinity junior Clay Shively came closest with the win by nearly four seconds in 4:07.92.

So far, 270 meets have been tracked. Teams around the state wrap up the regular season with league championship meets Thursday and Friday. Regional action follows the following Thursday and Friday.
