The cold and rain may have been ideal for farmers, but it did track and field athletes few favors late last week. Some meets were canceled and others saw abbreviated schedules. But there was still plenty of movement across all the charts. Heading into the final week before league meets, 222 meets have been tallied.

Class 6A saw a showdown of top sprinters that will see one another again next Thursday at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in Great Bend. Garden City’s Jerry Arteaga posted the ninth-fastest 100m dash time across all classes in 10.67. Dodge City’s Tochi Okoro, a junior, finished just behind him in 10.69.

Pawnee Heights (1A) senior Alec Carlson has been near the top of the all-class high jump list. Friday in Topeka, another Class 1A jumper took the state lead as Burlingame senior Matthew Heckman cleared the bar at 6-10.

What a show a pair of javelin throwers put on Friday in Gardner. Gardner-Edgerton junior Dawson Kindler put up a throw of 190-4, but he was beat by a single inch by Olathe Northwest senior Kyle Souders. Conditions must have been ideal as Olathe West senior Vincent Catschet placed fourth at the meet, but his throw of 179-5 moved him to No. 3 in Class 6A. Olathe East junior Brett Carroll moved into the 6A lead with a shot put toss of 56-9.
