So far, 185 high school track meets have been pored through for the 2023 track and field tracker. No week has been as good, across the board, as week four. Many class and event leaders either gained on their lead or were replaced. Many school records fell.

Andover Central junior Bryce Barkdull entered last week as the only pole vaulter to clear 16 feet this spring. Tuesday in Andover, he moved to No. 2 all-time in Kansas by clearing the bar at 17-3.25.

Wichita Trinity junior Clay Shively and Shawnee Mission East senior Wyatt Haughton have been up historical times this spring. Shively already had the second-fastest time in state history in the 3200m run with a season-debut in 8:50.75. Friday in Lawrence, Haughton joined the fray with a 9:03.05 to move to No. 11 all-time in Kansas. Many of the state’s top athletes met in Lawrence last Friday for the Barrier Breakers meet. The distance races, in particular, at that meet, helped reset many of the top times in several classes.

Kiowa County’s relay teams set a pair of school records Friday. The 4x100 team of Brock Deterding, Nazar Haydon, Hunter Thompson, and Brady Deterding took the 1A lead in 44.28. The 4x400 team of both Deterdings, Thompson, and Kaden Welsoh opened up a three-second 1A lead in 3:35.06 with a school record. Ethan Burton set new Council Grove school records in the 100m and 200m dashes, and was part of the 4x100 team that also set a record Friday.
