The 800m run proved to be one of the highlights at the 100th Kansas Relays Friday and Saturday in Lawrence. Friday featured warm weather and wind, allowing two runners to break into the state’s top-11 all-time in the 800m run. Shawnee Mission East’s Wyatt Haughton climbed to No. 7 all-time with the win in 1:51.42. Wichita Trinity’s Clay Shively finished in 1:51.94 to move to No. 11 all-time. Shively’s banner year continues as the junior has already posted the second-fastest all-time finishes in the 1500m, 1600m, and 3200m runs this spring

Great Bend senior Kaiden Esfeld made history of his own by breaking a 55-year-old school record at the Jack Bowman Invitational on Friday. Esfeld took the Class 5A lead in the 1600m run and broke the record by 0.16 seconds in 4:20.74.

Wind may still be helping the sprinters. Maize senior Bryce Cohoon ran a 21.54 200m dash Friday in Manhattan to take the all-class lead. Hutchinson sophomore Spencer Riggs followed in 21.91 for the No. 2 all-class time this season. Cohoon also ran a 10.57 in the 100m dash. Only two sprinters have a better time this season, including Pleasanton senior Isaiah Bates, who climbed to No. 11 all-time in Kansas with a 10.41 at the KU Relays.

So far, 136 meets have been tallied this season.
