Stanton County senior Chesney Peterson and Salina Central sophomore Katelyn Rupe both ran regional cross country races in Great Bend. But they did not race each other. Two of the state’s best met Thursday evening at the Pre-State Challenge at Wichita State University.

University of Tennessee bound Peterson posted the eighth-fastest time in Kansas history to win the 1600m run against Rupe, who later posted the fastest 3200m time through Thursday. Rupe dropped to third after many of the state’s top runners this year went head to head in Olathe.

Elsewhere at the Pre-State Challenge, Andale’s Mckenzie Fairchild improved on her massive javelin lead in the state this spring with a throw of 155-9. No other thrower has surpassed 138 feet. Great Bend senior Valarie Luna, the reigning 5A runner-up in the high jump, broke a 44-year-old school record by clearing the bar at 5-6.5. She sits just half an inch off the all-class lead this spring.

Through two-plus weeks of action, 94 meets have been tallied. Most of the sheets have filled but some events remain open to the next great competitors. Many of the top times and marks were reset with big meets and nice weather last Thursday and Friday.
