Derby girls run over East, pull off Panther sweep
DERBY, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - After the Derby boys pulled out a buzzer-beater win in likely the game of the season Friday night, all eyes in the school turned to the girls team Saturday night. The Panthers hosted the East High Blue Aces after they pulled off the upset of Heights earlier in the week. After a tight first half, Derby was able to punch their ticket to the state tournament with a much less stressful win, 57-29.
East and Heylei Davis (11) kept it to a 12 point game heading into halftime, but a 24-8 Derby run in the third quarter all but sealed the Aces fate. McDonald’s All-American Addy Brown led the way with a game high 18 points, as junior Destiny Smith and sophomore Kallie Rickords finished in the scoring column behind them with 9 a piece.
Derby will now be the 2 seed in the 6A state tournament at Koch Arena in Wichita. They will await official brackets to release for their matchup.
