Hesston overpowers Haven behind Brueggen’s 30

LYONS, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Hesston Lady Swathers defeated the Haven Lady Wildcats by a score of 52-38 to advance to the Lyons 3A Sub-State Final.

Hesston came into the semifinal round as the second seed of the tournament with a 16-5 record. Fellow Central Kansas League team, Haven, a spot lower in the three seed with an identical 16-5 record.

The first quarter was an even defensive affair. Both teams only scored seven points.

Hesston took control of the game in the second quarter. Kendall Brueggen made three three-pointers along with two field goals to account for 13 of the 16 points scored.

Haven would only add nine points to their total.

At halftime, Hesston led 23-16.

The Lady Swathers expanded that lead to 15 points in the third quarter.

In the first half, Hesston only made one of six free throws. They had a better time shooting in the second half. They only missed two out of 13 attempts in the last two quarters.

Both teams scored 17 points in the fourth quarter. Most of those points came from free throws.

Sienna DeFrain led Haven in scoring with 10 points. She made three field goals and was a perfect four of four from the free throw line.

Hesston’s Kendall Brueggen led all scorers with 30 points. She made three field goals and went six of seven free throws. She also made a school-record six three-pointers.

“When she got her first one to go down, she really relaxed and let the game start to come to her,” said Hesston Head Coach Matt Richardson.

Haven ends their season with a 16-6 record.

Hesston will face Cheney for the Sub-State Championship yet again.

“We got them at Sub-State last year, I’m sure that’s still in their minds,” said Coach Richardson of Cheney. “They’re great competition. I love getting them on our schedule. You throw good size and good guards that Coach McCormick has they are a complete team.”
