Hillsboro, Hesston split competitive contests Friday
HILLSBORO, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Friday night’s action in Hillsboro featured two ranked girls teams going at it to open the night, and what looked like could’ve put the CKL on upset watch in the boys matchup.
#4 Hillsboro holds on in overtime to top 3A #7 Hesston
In the opening matchup of the night, both ranked teams took turns trading blows. The Trojans jumped out to an early lead, but it didn’t take Kendal Brueggen and the Swathers to storm back to make this a tight game. It stayed tight the whole second half, and ended regulation with a Carley Bartell finish inside with under two minutes to play to tie the game up. In overtime though it was all Hillsboro, as the Trojans jumped out to a 5 point lead early and sealed the deal with free throws late to move to 12-3 on the season. Savannah Shahan led the scoring for the Trojans with 12 points, with Zaylee Werth and Kingzley Ratzlaff.
Hillsboro boys play #4 Hesston in a tight first half in a battle of defending state champions
In the nightcap, defending state champions Hillsboro and Hesston squared off. Hesston has rode the momentum from the state title into this year posting a 13-1 record coming into Friday. Hillsboro on the other hand lost a lot of their state championship squad to graduation and were off to a 5-9 record on the season. Nevertheless, the Trojans found a way to battle with the Swathers through the first half, heading into the locker rooms tied. Hesston jumped ahead in the second half though, going on to win another one, 46-37. Jake Proctor had a game high 14 points in the win.
