WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Wichita Collegiate Spartans came into Friday a perfect 4-0 behind some stellar play from their young team. And it was that young freshman core that helped propel the #6 Spartans over league rival Rose Hill to move them to 5-0 with one game to go heading into the new year.

Freshmen Sebastian Hines-Turner (18), AJ Batiste (16) and Jaden Parker (11) all finished with double figures in the win to continue their early tear of their high school careers.

“Believe it or not, the last time I had a team this young was 1993,” Collegiate Head Coach Mitch Fiegel said.

Although the young trio has only as much varsity playing experience as games they’ve played this season, it hasn’t held the Spartans back much at all, and are only getting better as the season goes on, Fiegel said.

“It’s kind of refreshing in some ways [to have such a young team], but in other ways it’s a little challenging. We’re working through some things,” he said. “In that second half we got a little complacent. Lots of reaching, lots of lunging, lots of gambling. That just doesn’t go well with the style of ball that we’re playing.”

But with such an athletic group of players Fiegel said it allows them to play in ways that they wouldn’t be able to otherwise.

“I just feel like this style of play was almost manufactured for this group of guys. Once we take out the gambling, we’re going to be a really, really tough out.”

“Me and my other freshman buddies, AJ and Jaden, we try to push each other a lot in practice,” Freshman Sebastian Hines-Turner said. “We try to pay attention. Try to work with the older guys because we all want to be better.”
