McPherson runs away from Circle in 4A sectionals
McPHERSON, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The McPherson Bullpups scored twice in the latter stages of the second quarter, turning a 20-7 deficit into an eventual 49-28 victory in Friday’s 4A sectional round at McPherson Stadium.
Circle began the game with a 75-yard touchdown on the first play as Cooper Chadwell found Ty Smith for the passing score and a 7-0 lead.
McPherson responded with a rushing touchdown to tie the game at 7.
Circle then fumbled the ensuing kickoff return, but McPherson coughed up the ball on its next play.
Later in the first quarter, Westin Rose sprinted away for a long touchdown run and 13-7 lead.
Chadwell later ran in a touchdown a 20-7 lead.
On fourth-and-7, McPherson QB Hunter Alvord threw an interception in the end zone, but Chadwell was picked off by Gavin Richardson two plays later, and he returned it for a touchdown.
With McPherson driving in the final seconds, Circle’s Nick Ahles appeared to thwart the drive with an interception, but it was ruled incomplete.
Alvord then through a touchdown to Cory Muehler for a 21-20 lead, and McPherson took over in the second half.
McPherson will travel to Wamego in the sub-state round next Friday.
