Maize pulls away from Kapaun in 5A regionals
MAIZE, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Maize and Kapaun Mt. Carmel combined for touchdowns on the first five drives of Friday’s 5A West Regional, but the top-seeded Eagles ended the game on a 30-0 run to win 43-14 in the rain and wind.
Maize scored on the opening drive of the game when Avery Johnson scored on a keeper, but Kapaun marched down for the first of two Omari Elias rushing scores.
Tay Williams responded with a short scamper in to paydirt, but Elias’ second TD gave Kapaun a 14-13 lead.
Daeshaun Carter scored midway through the second quarter for a 20-14 lead before Maize forced the first punt of the night. Johnson then ran in his second rushing score for a two-score lead an 27-14 halftime edge.
Maize will host Hutch in the 5A sectionals.
