Kapaun comes back to beat Goddard in 5A playoffs
GODDARD, Kan. (Catch It Kansas) - Dominic Zuniga made a field goal on the final play before halftime to draw 5A West No. 9 Kapaun Mt. Carmel level with No. 8 Goddard. The Crusaders used the momentum to outscore the Lions 14-0 in the second half, defeating Goddard 31-17 in the opening round of the 5A playoffs.
Kapaun (5-4) began the game with an interception of Goddard (5-4), though the Lions came up with a goalline stand on fourth down to get the ball back.
The Crusaders eventually took a 7-0 lead on a rushing score by Dylan Hamilton, though Goddard answered with back-to-back rushing touchdowns from Micah Johnson for a 14-7 lead midway through the second.
Kapaun sophomore Omari Elias responded with a 70-yard touchdown to level the game at 14, though both teams made field goals in the 90 seconds before half.
Kapaun moves on to a meeting with 5A West No. 1 Maize next week.
