Cheney moves on following Voth’s big night
CHENEY, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - A pair of 6-2 teams battled it out in Cheney as the Cardinals played host to the Hugoton Eagles. Cheney would be the one advancing through the bracket as they win, 28-7.
Although points were hard to come by in the beginning of this one for both sides -- only 7 in the first quarter -- the Cardinals pass game would get sparked late in the first half. In what may have been the drive that set the tempo for the rest of the game, Cheney went nearly 100 yards downfield for the score. After an Eagle punt pinned the Cardinals within their own 5 (and a TFL put them even deeper in their own territory), the Cheney offense came to life. A Josh Burdick pass to Colter McDaniel and a nice run after the catch gave them much better field position to work with. And they didn’t waste any time taking advantage of that field position, firing a deep ball to Jackson Voth, 55 yards for Voth’s second touchdown of the first half to put Cheney up 14-0.
Voth continued his hot first half later in the second quarter as Burdick found him in the corner of the end zone for a nice toe tap catch to put the Cardinals up even more. The scoring slowed down in the second half as both side’s defense turned up the heat, as Hugoton and Cheney both punched in one touchdown a piece.
Cheney will advance in the 3A West bracket as they will take on Scott City next Friday in a second round matchup.
