HESSTON, Kan. (KWCH) - Wichita Collegiate took a 21-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second and needed every point to survive a Hesston comeback, earning a 28-21 win to claim the district championship.

Carson Phelps opened the game with a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, taking advantage of a short kick to get on the board.

Wesley Fair ran in a quarterback sneak to make it 14-0, then a rushing score early in the second extended the Spartans (7-1) lead to 21-0.

The Swathers (6-2) drove down the field behind Hudson Ferralez’s arm, ending with a Jackson Fry score on a leaping catch to make it 21-7 at haldtime.

Karter Gonzalez ran in a touchdown to chip away at the lead. Down 28-14, Jake Proctor hauled in an 18-yard touchdown catch from Ferralez, though only 50 seconds remained.

Both teams will begin postseason play next week.
