Bishop Carroll clinches sole possession of GWAL title, downs East
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Bishop Carroll didn’t play the prettiest football en route to their outright GWAL championship, but they showed up when it was needed. This game featured six lead changes, with five in the second half alone, but it was the Golden Eagles pulling out the 34-30 win.
“The offense’s mindset is score every time. We knew the defense was going to get a stop. It was a big one there in the red zone,” said Bishop Carroll QB Jackson King. “We just knew we had to chew the clock out at that point. we knew it was our turn and we won the game.”
While there was turnovers a plenty in this matchup -- four in the first four drives to be exact -- Bishop Carroll head coach Dusty Trail was pleased with his teams ability to pull out the gritty win.
“I like the way the kids came back every time,” he said. “That indicates a good attitude. But, by the same token, I would like for us to not put ourselves in that situation so many times.”
A huge different maker in this game, and most games this season was junior quarterback Jackson King. King wasn’t the starter in week one against Northwest, but proved his way into the starting role and has continued to prove it game by game.
“It’s kind of a breakout season. I’m kind of showing what I can do,” he said. “Honestly, if it wasn’t for the guys around me, I wouldn’t be able to do that. It’s a big thanks to them and the coaches putting in great game plans, helping me make plays and helping my teammates make plays. Just everyone doing the right thing kind of helps me succeed.”
Bishop Carroll now owns sole possession of the GWAL title for the first time 2017. The Golden Eagles will now host the Newton Railers for the first round of the 5A state playoffs.
