CIK Football Rankings: Week 2
We are through a week of games, and with that comes a lot of shuffling from our preseason rankings, especially at the top in 6A which is where we begin.
CLASS 6A

Of the preseason top ten, 6 teams fell in week one, which brings a brand new look to the top ten. BVNW won a battle of defending state champs over St. James and they rise to the top. Manhattan makes a big jump from 9 to 2 after stunning top ranked Derby. The Panthers remain in the top three after the overtime loss. Olathe West earned a big win over previously ranked Free State to jump to 4. Wichita NW and Blue Valley West both dropped games to teams ranked in smaller classes. Blue Valley goes from unranked to 7 after beating 5A ranked Blue Valley SW.

Dropped out: Andover
The top three remain the same, all big winners week one. Carroll earned one of the week’s biggest wins but rises just one spot due to the strength at the top. Hays makes a jump after their comeback win over a 6A-ranked Junction City squad. Maize South’s dominant win over Andover bumps the Mavs up while knocking Andover from 4th to the outside looking in following the 28 point game. Topeka Seaman takes their spot to debut at 10th.

Defending champ St. James fell to BVNW, but remains top three behind Aquinas and Bishop Miege. Both the Saints and the Stags came away with big wins over 6A opponents, Aquinas beating ranked BV West. 4-7 remain the same, and Buhler falls out after losing by three scores to Andover Central, making way for Eudora.

Andale took care of business, but a slight upset right behind them came when Holton fell to Nemaha Central. The Thunder were top 5 in 2A, thus the loss knocks Holton down just a couple spots. Rock Creek also fell out of our top 5, but just one spot after a 12 point loss to the top ranked team in 2A, Southeast of Saline. Frontenac took a narrow loss, but a dominant shutout win for Scott City over Cimarron was enough to bring them up from being unranked.

SES took care of business against a ranked Rock Creek team to stay first, but there was a shake up right behind them. Rossville saw their 26 game win streak come to an end, and Beloit was stunned by Ellsworth, the Bearcats holding them to just 6 points. Rossville moves down a couple spot, and Beloit just stays in the top 10. Hoisington took a narrow road loss to Hesston, and just missed out on staying in. Garden Plain’s 6-0 win over 1A #6 Conway Springs was enough to bring them into the poll.

No teams dropped out of the top ten in 1A, but three teams did take losses to start the season. St. Marys backed up its top ranking in ending Rossville’s win streak, but Olpe saw a 24 game win streak of their own come to an end at the hands of Topeka Hayden. They remain top five. Conway Springs and Sedgwick both also fall, but remain at the bottom of the poll.

Preseason number 1 Little River fell by 30 to Canton-Galva, a team playing down three seniors due to injuries. They stay top five but just narrowly. Defending champ Meade earned a shutout win and moved up to the top spot. South Sumner, the new co-op of Caldwell & South Haven, makes their way to the top ten with Trego falling.

Axtell holds onto the top spot, but just barely--not because of what they did but because of how Canton-Galva played in their aforementioned win over Little River. Hanover falls from the top five after a big home loss to Clifton-Clyde. Dighton leaps into the top five, while Bucklin and St. Paul debut in the rankings.

The first week of 6-man football within KSHSAA saw the defending champs suffer their first loss since 2020 with Northern Valley shutting out Natoma. They move up to 2, while Cunningham holds on to the top spot after an 8 point win at Ashland. The Jays move up a spot despite the loss. Tescott and Ingalls, both new to 6-man, make their debut to round out the rankings.
