MAIZE, Kan. (CatchItKansas) - The Maize South Mavericks made a statement in week one, defeating the Andover Trojans 44-16.

Heading into Friday’s week one matchup, the Andover Trojans and Maize South Mavericks were in our preseason top-ten rankings. Andover checking in at No. 4. Maize South checking in at No. 9.

In the first half it was all Maize South. The Mavericks offense was clicking on all cylinders with big play after big play. Sophomore Quarterback Tate McNew connected with Jeron Askren, Sammy Dresie and Alex Giroux for scores. Maize South’s defense was stout as well, an all-around team effort leading to a 27-0 halftime lead.

Andover would get on the scoreboard in the second half; however it was too little too late. McNew connected with Dresie for another score in the second half. The duo connected for three touchdowns in the victory.

Mavericks head coach Brent Pfeifer is excited about what his team showed him tonight.

“Just really proud of the young kids and you know the senior leadership we had tonight was fantastic,” said Pfeifer. “It was a good team win, both sides of the ball played really well.”

In week two, Maize South goes on the road to play against Campus. Andover will play at home against Ark City.
