Derby falls to Manhattan in OT, 26-23
DERBY, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Derby Panthers missed field goals at the end of regulation and in overtime, and a Manhattan field goal handed the No. 1 team in Class 6A a season-opening loss.
It’s the first time Derby has lost back-to-back games since the final game of 2012 and the ‘13 opener.
Manhattan won the toss and elected to receive, and they are up 15-0 by the midway point of the second quarter with a pair of rushing scores. But senior running back Dylan Edwards responded with a 68-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 15-7 at halftime.
Edwards cut the deficit to two on the opening drive of the second quarter with a 30-yard touchdown, and then a blocked punt gave the Panthers the ball in the red zone. They took the lead with a field goal.
Derby later recovered a fumble, leading to a Derek Hubbard touchdown run and 23-15 lead. Manhattan tied the game early in the fourth.
Derby will face Salina South in Week 2.
