BELOIT, Kan. (KWCH) - The Trojans of Beloit have made a name for themselves in northern Kansas. Last season they made a run at the 2A state title last season, falling to Rossville in the championship game. They aren’t ready to hang their hats on being runner-ups though, they bring back a large core from last year’s team and are looking for more.

One of their big pieces coming back all-state running back Benson Berndt. Berndt rushed for over 1,800 yards along with compiling 25 touchdowns last season. Berndt unfortunately went down in the state semifinal with an ankle injury, and was unable to play in the title game.

“Benson has been a core piece of our team for the last couple years. He’s had two huge seasons running the ball,” Beloit Head Coach Brad Gober said. “He was such a huge part of us getting [to the championship.] So we’re really excited to get him back.”

Another big part of the Trojans team coming back is its bolstering offensive line led by senior Grady Seyfert. Seyfert has started picking up recruiting interest ahead of the season, and it’s no surprise with his six-foot-two 275 pound build and his team leading 71 tackles.

“It’s definitely cool to see your name out there,” Seyfert said. “I just hope I can keep impressing people and doing what I’m trying to do.”

With Beloit bringing back a lot of their same pieces, the expectation remains the same for the Trojans to compete for a state championship, and they believe they can do it.

“I’m really excited to see what we’re going to do this year,” said Seyfert. “We lost a lot of really good seniors last year, but I think we have some good underclassmen coming up. That’ll be exciting to see what they can do.”

“Our expectation is always to to do well and have a late run. That’s that’s the expectation at this place,” Head Coach Brad Gober said. “It’s a very tradition rich place and that’s the expectation. There’s no other way to put it.”

The Trojans will open their schedule this Friday on the road, taking on Ellsworth. But week two will be the game to look for - our #1 ranked team in class 2A Southeast of Saline headed to Beloit, our #3 ranked team. For our full list of preseason rankings for all classes click here.
