WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Wichita Collegiate gets the luxury of seeing Andale exit its district this fall, though the Spatans know they’ll eventually have to meet if they’re to advance deep in the playoffs.

“I can tell this team is hungry. We really want it,” said senior Wesley Fair, a Kansas State defensive back commit. “We all wanna win a state championship. Obviously we have to go through Andale, but I really think this team is hungry enough and is gonna do what needs to be done to win.”

Collegiate finished last year 8-2, the third season under longtime staffer Troy Black. Much of his time has been spent with this current group of seniors, which makes up a large portion of the Spartans’ skill positions and defense.

Among that group are senior receivers Johnny Abromeit, Conner Jones and Jaden Mitchell, the 3A 100-meter champion. Senior Hayden Malaise is also back at tight end.

“There’s a lot of pressure on this senior class because they’ve been around and have been part of the last two years and the success we’ve had,” Black said. “There’s pressure on this group, but they wanna succeed and be successful.”

Senior Conner Gagnon returns with 60 tackles for the defense, while Fair patrolled the back end last year with two interceptions.

“I think the sky’s the limit, obviously. We’re looking for a ring,” Gagnon said. “We’re just excited to leave everything out there this year.”
