ANDOVER, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - There are questions aplenty for an Andover Central team coming off a 4A championship game appearance, as the Jags must replace eight starters on each side of the ball.

Andover Central went 11-2 in Derek Tuttle’s third season, falling to St. James in the title game. But that group included a wealth of collegiate athletes, including QB Kai Kunz (KU), Andrew Mann (Garden City CC), Drew Daniels (Pitt State) and Isaac Sheeran (Pitt State). Ashton Barkdull is also at KU as a pole vaulter.

Better each other every day has been a big focus in the preseason.

“We’ve gotta be a very competitive group because we have about 8 starting positions to fill on each side of the ball,” Tuttle said. “Getting that high level of competition every day is gonna be a key for us.”

The quarterback position will be filled by a newcomer, but they’ll have the luxury of an experienced player like Cooper Tabor. The senior tallied nearly 950 yards of offense with 10 touchdowns and is the leading rusher and receiver back from last year.

The defense welcomes back for experience, led by Mason White’s 57 tackles and three interceptions. Senior Bronx Wood and junior Mason Sanchez have emerged as leaders while El Dorado transfer Drew Veatch joins the fold.

But the Jaguars have been strong under Tuttle, tallying two championship berths and a 29-6 record.

“It’s gonna be a challenging year, I think, because we lost a lot of guys,” Tabor said. “But I think we’re gonna surprise some people.”
