WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Girls state soccer semifinal matchups are set with the quarterfinal round in the books! All matchups for the semifinal round begin at 5:00 Friday, May 27th, with championship and third place matches to follow Saturday, May 28th.

CLASS 6A

Both CIK area teams fell in the Tuesday contests, with Washburn Rural ending Wichita Northwest’s season 8-0 and Garden City falling to Manhattan 3-1. It was the second straight 8-0 win for the Lady Blues over a GWAL opponent after they ended Wichita East’s season in the regional final last Friday. They and Manhattan will both now seek their first state championship in Olathe. Defending champion Blue Valley West will look to repeat as the top seed from the East side of the bracket.

Games held at Olathe’s College Boulevard Activity Center

[1W] Washburn Rural (16-2-1) vs [2E] Olathe Northwest (14-4-1) - 5:00pm

[1E] Blue Valley West (14-3-1) vs [2W] Manhattan (15-3-1) - 7:00pm

CLASS 5A

Top seeded Goddard Eisenhower won their rubber match against the lone team to best them this season, Andover, in a 2-0 shutout to reach the state semifinals for the first time. Freshman Mackenzie Jordan got the scoring started early for the Tigers, needing just 5 minutes to find the back of the net to give them a 1-0 lead that held up through the first half. Then after the break, Bella Smith buried an insurance goal from deep to secure the 2-0 win over the Trojans.

Then in Maize, it was an all USD 266 game with Maize South hosting the Eagles. Maize got on the attack early behind a Haley Rogers goal, but that ended up being all that Maize could muster despite keeping the Mavericks off the board the opening 40 minutes. Senior Adriana Delgado leveled the match at 1 apiece early in the second half, the first goal of her brace, before Grizel Lumbreras netted what turned out to be the game winner in the 50th minute. It’s the Mavs second straight semifinal appearance after taking 4th a year ago.

Games held at Wichita’s Stryker Complex

[1E] St. Thomas Aquinas (15-0-2) vs [2W] Maize South (16-1-2) - 5:00pm

[1W] Goddard Eisenhower (17-1-1) vs [2E] Mill Valley (17-2-0) - 7:00pm

CLASS 4-1A

A pair of regular season rematches were held in the 4-1A quarterfinals, with Buhler reversing a regular season result to upset last year’s state runner up Tuesday night 2-1. Like the first time the two met, the match was scoreless at the break. Then Mulvane kicked into gear to score four second half goals, but this time it was the Crusaders that started things with Aubrey Tanksley getting the scoring started in the 56th minute. But five minutes later, Emma Kolbe came through for Mulvane to level it at a goal apiece. The match felt like it was headed for overtime until Tanksley sent home her second goal of the match, this the game winner to send Buhler through to the semifinals

Then in McPherson, the Bullpups needed an extra 17 minutes but outlasted Circle in double overtime, 3-2, to get back to the semifinal round. It was an uneventful start of the match until Megan Everhart send a knuckler off the far post and in for the lone goal of the first half. It then didn’t take long for the Bullpups to add a second off a corner kick finished by Olive Rodriguez for a 2-0 lead. The Mac attack kept up, but Circle keeper Hannah Stipp did her part with an abundance of great saves, and her work paid off late. Milan Hunter was finally able to break through for the Thunderbirds with 4 minutes to go to make it 2-1, then in the 78th minute Kya Thornton sent home the tiebreaker from near the sideline to force extra time. The overtime period stayed largely even until McPherson’s Lauren Labertew had a run at the goal, her shot blocked by Stipp only to deflect to Ellie Bower for the game winner in the 97th minute.

Games held at Topeka’s Hummer Sports Park

[1E] Cair Paravel (15-3-0) vs [2W] Buhler (11-7-0)

[1W] McPherson (15-3-1) vs [2W] Bishop Miege (13-5-1)
