Some of state’s best to miss this year’s state competition
Regional week is always full of trial and tribulation on the track and in the field. The 2022 season is no different as many athletes qualified for state and many more missed due to injury, tough regionals, or poor performances.
The 2022 state meet was already going to be lacking in the Class 5A 100m dash with former Hays sprinter Jaren Kanak moving on to the University of Oklahoma early. Reigning champion Jeremiah Smith, who moved to No. 1 all-time in the state, did not run at regionals to leave that field wide open. Smith will also be missing in the hurdles where he won the 5A 110s last spring and ranked top-four all-class in both hurdle events this spring.
Still in Class 5A, Aquinas’ Logan Seger led in the 5A 1600m and 3200m runs before missing regionals to leave those events a little more wide open next weekend. Class 2A pole vault leader Nate Hein, one of just a handful of vaulters to clear the bar at 14-0 around the state this spring, will also be missing from state.
Thank you to all who sent in missing results or corrections this season. Best of luck to all athletes competing at state.
