Dodge City softball earns sweep of Great Bend
GREAT BEND, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Dodge City Lady Red Demons put up eight runs in both games of a doubleheader against the Great Bend Lady Panthers to sweep the day.
The Lady Red Demons took an early lead in the first game after Easha Potts reached on a one-out double. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Potts scored from third after a wild pitch.
Great Bend took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Halle Post reached on a two-out single. Melyne Fletchall, the next batter, reached after an error by the Dodge City third baseman. Paige Thexton then scored Post and Fletchall with a double. Great Bend took a 2-1 lead into the fourth inning.
Dodge City responded with a two-out rally of their own in the next inning. Lady Panther pitcher Paige Thexton walked Brittany Lomas with two down. Lomas stole second and made it to third on a wild pitch. Taryn Coon then singled to join Lomas on the base paths. Easha Potts was next up in the order and hit a two-RBI single. Potts also scored after Marisela Landa put a ball into play with a single. Landa was called out in a rundown between third and home.
Great Bend now trailed 4-2. In the fourth inning, they sent four batters to the plate, but none failed to advance farther than second.
The Lady Panthers would rally again in the bottom of the fifth inning. Halle Post started things off with a one-out single. Melyne Fletchall followed Post with a double. Paige Thexton came to the plate and hit another two-RBI double to score Post and Fletchall. DeShawna Bryant singled next. Analiz Rivas hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Fletchall to score. Briley Richter reached first on a single that also scored Bryant.
At the end of the inning, Great Bend retook the lead 6-4.
The Dodge City bats would go to work again in the next half-inning. With two runners out, Taryn Coon walked. Easha Potts then reached on a fielder’s choice. Marisela Landa’s single would score Coon. Tatum Steiner then singled to bring Potts home.
The score was now tied at six runs each.
Dodge City held Great Bend scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.
The Lady Demons tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh. Addyson Froestschner reached first on a one-out walk. Macy Musslin then singled. Brittany Lomas hit a two-RBI single to give Dodge City eight total runs.
Great Bend went to the plate in the bottom of the seventh needing two runs to tie and three to win. Analiz Rivas hit a single to score Paige Thexton to get back one run. After Rivas, the Lady Panthers could not get another baserunner and lost the first game 8-7.
The Great Bend players distributed eggs in the outfield between the games for kids in attendance to hunt and collect.
Dodge City got the bats going quickly in the second game.
Taryn Coon hit a home run in the very first at-bat. The following batters went down one-two-three. The Lady Demons would add another run in the top of the second inning. Ashlyn Lembright scored on an Alexandra Ortiz single to center field.
Easha Potts reached on a single hit towards third in the top of the third inning. Marisela Landa then came to the plate and hit a two-run home run.
Great Bend got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Paige Thexton hit a lead-off home run to start the inning. Lauryn Davis reached on a one-out single towards third. After back-to-back walks, Rylee Prilling drove in Davis with a single along the third baseline. At the end of the fourth inning, Great Bend trailed 4-2.
Tatum Steiner hit a lead-off home run to start the sixth inning. Camryn Lenz then hit an against-the-wall double. Lenz would score on a fielding error by the Great Bend shortstop.
Dodge City increased their lead to 6-2.
The Lady Red Demons tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh. Easha Potts hit a comebacker to the pitcher and was thrown out at first. Her play allowed Brittany Lomas to score from third. Marisela Landa then hit a single to left field and scored Taryn Coon from second base.
Great Bend only managed one baserunner in the bottom of the seventh and lost 8-2.
