Rising Star: Wichita West’s Zephran Jeter
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Baseball season is underway and the Wichita West Pioneers have been led so far by some stellar pitching - including a no-hitter.
The pitching staff consists of four seniors: Zephran Jeter, Brantley Griggs, Kaden Clemans and Nicolas Gonzalez. Through four league games the staff has allowed only two runs.
West High’s pitching coach Creighton Hoover said that he has high praise for his senior heavy pitching staff.
“You put those guys out there and you know what we’re gonna get out of them,” Hoover said. “It’s not a guessing game with those guys. For the most part you can run those guys out there and let them slam the door on a game.”
Jeter so far has been the ace on this Pioneer team. Through his three starts he has sat down 24 batters on strikes and only allowed two earned runs. Last week, Jeter also threw a no-hitter on the way to a Pioneers’ win - only one walk shy of a perfect game.
The Pioneers are currently 4-0 in league play and are looking to keep the trend going into May, said Jeter.
“We’ve got four solid guys on the mound so if we keep doing it the way we’ve done it, we got this,” he said.
Hoover said that he thinks “It’s gonna be hard to beat the way we’ve been throwing it the last four games or so but if we can keep getting better and improve on this we’re going to be a tough out come may.”
