South Gray boys advance to title game
DODGE CITY, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The South Gray Rebels advanced to the State Championship game for the second year in a row after defeating the Solomon Gorillas 79-46.The two teams locked up in the second Boys semifinal of the Class 1A Division I tournament held in Dodge City.
South Gray scored first with a Jorge Lupercio layup. Spencer Coup made a three-pointer to put the Gorillas on the board but they trailed 4-3 at that point. South Gray would quickly take control of the game with three three-pointers by Brady Deges and one by Jorge Lupercio in the first quarter. By the end of the quarter, they led 20-8 over the Gorillas.
The Rebels would add another 20 points in the second quarter. Solomon would add 11, but they tailed 40-19 at halftime.
South Gray scored another 21 points in the third quarter while Solomon would score 18.At the end of the game, South Gray put a total of 79 points on the board to Solomon’s 46.The Rebels shot 61.1% from the field going 33 of 54. They made seven of 14 three-pointers and went six of 13 from the free-throw line. Both Jorge Lupercio and Brady Deges scored a total of 21 points to lead all scorers. Brent Penner added 14 points.
Solomon shot 18 of 45 from the field for 40%. They made four of 14 three-point shots and went six of 10 from the free-throw line. Makaen Hastings led the team with 16 points. Dylan Hynes added 15 points and Spencer Coup contributed 10.South Gray will face the Olpe Eagles for the second year in a row for the Class 1A Division I championship on Saturday afternoon.
