Dodge City’s strong defense knocks off Heights girls

WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - A matchup between two of the top girls teams in 6A, Wichita Heights hosting Dodge City for the sub-state championship. Both teams coming in with 18-3 records but the Lady Demons would come away with the 52-46 win over the Falcons.

In a slow first quarter, Heights put up only four points and Dodge City had eight. The Falcons went into the half with a one-point lead, 17-16. But the Demons would change that in the second half, shooting over 50 percent from the field and hitting almost 70 percent from the free throw line.

Dodge City out-rebounded Heights, 40-25 and scored 11 points off turnovers. Heights though, had 15 points off Demon turnovers and hit eight three-pointers. Two of those long balls coming from senior Zyanna Walker who led the team with 18 total points, five assists and nine rebounds. Mya Mayberry followed her up with nine points. Camree Johnson had a game high 20-points for Dodge, the only other Lady Demon shooting double digits was Becca Unruh with ten points.

Dodge City will advance tot he 6A girls state basketball tournament which begins with quarterfinals on March 9th at Koch Arena.
