Hesston cruises past Collegiate in 3A sub-state semis
NICKERSON, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Hesston Swathers defeated the Wichita Collegiate Spartans 57-27 to advance to the championship game of the Nickerson 3A Boys Sub-State tournament.
Hesston scored the first points of the night with a basket. Wichita Collegiate would match it to tie the game up. The Swathers then came back and went on a seven-point run to go up 12-5. They would end the quarter with an 18-7 lead. Jake Proctor scored a total of 12 points in the first quarter.
The Spartans added 10 points to their score in the second quarter. Hesston added 15. The Swathers took a 33-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Hesston held Wichita Collegiate to only six points in the third quarter. At the same time, the Swathers added another 18 points to their lead. At the end of the quarter, Hesston held a 51-23 advantage.
The Swathers scored only six points in the fourth quarter. It was enough to get the point margin to 30 points and start a running clock.
Jake Proctor led all scorers with 16 points. “Jake can really shoot it,” Hesston Head Coach Greg Raleigh of Jake Proctor. “He’s a very good shooter.” Cason Richardson added 14 points. The Swathers as a whole made five three-pointers, 18 field goals, and went six of seven from the free-throw line.
Wesley Fair scored eight points, which is the most of any Spartan.
Wichita Collegiate ends the season with a 15-6 record.
Hesston advances to face the Cheney Cardinals for the Sub-State championship on Saturday evening.
When asked what they would need to do Saturday against Cheney, Jake Proctor said, “We have to shoot the ball like we did tonight and play our defense like we did tonight.”
