NICKERSON, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Cheney Cardinals win their 3A Boys Sub-State semifinal over the Haven Wildcats 47-23 to advance to the championship game Saturday evening.

The Cardinals came into the game with an undefeated 21-0 record. They built a 10-2 lead on Haven three minutes into the first quarter. The Wildcats were able to narrow the lead some to get the score to 16-11 Cheney at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Cardinal defense shined. They only allowed one point the entire half for Haven. On the offensive end of the court, Cheney added seven points to their lead and took a score of 23-12 into the locker room.

Cheney separated from Haven in the third quarter. They held the Wildcats to only four points while scoring 16.

In the fourth quarter, Cheney scored eight points but could not find enough to cause a 30-point margin running clock.

The Cardinals ended the game with more three-pointers, nine, than two-pointers, eight. They also went a near-perfect four of five from the free-throw line.

“Our defense won the game for us,” said Cheney Head Coach Lindy Frieden. “I was happy with how we guarded their bigs because Haven is long on the inside.”

Harrison Voth led all scorers with 15 points including three three-pointers. Harrison Middleton had 14 points including four three-pointers. Luke Grace added 12 points including two three-pointers.

Cheney will face a 21-1 Hesston team for the opportunity to go to the state tournament in Hutchinson next week.

“I think two of the best teams in 3A will be playing here Saturday night,” said Coach Frieden. “A lot of our kids have played with Hesston’s kids in the summer. So they have some familiarity. We are excited for the opportunity and I really like my guys.”
