Berean Academy girls stop Hillsboro comeback to advance to sub-state final
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Elbing- Berean Academy touts the top seed in the 2A girls Remington sub-state bracket. Hillsboro ranked the fourth seed. The two teams faced each other in the sub-state semifinal.
Hillsboro’s Zaylee Werth lobbed the ball up around Berean defenders and got the ball to drop. Trojans took a two-point lead.
Alexa Timken came away with the loose ball after a missed shot and she took it back the other way for the layup. Rolling it in off the glass and that gave Berean the 15-9 lead.
Werth drove in and kicked out to Savannah Shahan for the long baseline two. Hillsboro crept its way back to be within two points.
Tayton Smith got the ball underneath and tossed it up and found the bottom to give the Warriors an 11-point lead.
The Trojans could pull off the comeback as Makenna Reed hit the corner three to make it a 1-point game with less than 30 seconds left to play.
But Berean would hold on to win 36-35, ending Hillsboro’s season and advancing to the sub-state championship game Saturday against second seed Remington.
