Hays girls take thriller over Maize South, 37-35
HAYS, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Hays Lady Indians advanced in the Class 5A West Sub-State with a 37-35 victory over the Maize South Lady Mavericks.
The Lady Mavericks took an early lead off an Avery Lowe layup after winning the opening tipoff.
Hays would tie the game up a minute later. Both teams would trade baskets for much of the quarter. A late layup by Maize South gave them a one-point lead at the end of the quarter, 10-9.Both sides scored eight points in the second quarter. Maize South took another one-point lead, 18-17, into the end of a quarter.
Hays started the third quarter on fire going on a nine-point run for the first four minutes. The Lady Indians would score a total of 11 points in the quarter with four players each scoring. Aleyia Ruder scored four of the 11 points.

Maize South woke up and scored nine points over the last three and a half minutes of the third quarter. Isis Sanders scored five of the nine points in the quarter.
Hays held a one-point lead, 28-27 at the end of the third quarter.At the 6:37 mark of the fourth quarter, the game once again was tied at 30 all. Maize South soon retook the lead by two points. Hays’ Molly Martin would make a basket to tie things up at 32-32 with 4:11 to go.
Jillyan Sheldon would put Hays up 35-32 after making a layup under the basket and getting fouled. She made the free throw for a three-point play.
With 36 seconds remaining in the game, Maize South’s Jenna Uehling drove to the basket and put up a shot. Her layup went in and she got fouled. Uehling completed the three-point play with her made free throw.
Once again the score was tied at 35 all.
Hays took the ball to their end. Maize South still had a couple of fouls to give. They tried to foul to regain possession. With 2.5 seconds on the clock, Molly Martin of Hays was fouled. That was the Lady Mavericks’ seventh team foul.

”I hit my head on the foul, at that point you have to push through it as it’s a close game,” said Molly Martin. The freshman Lady Indian went to the line and made her first one. “I was nervous but I was excited to hopefully win the game this time.” Martin made her second to give her team a 37-35 lead.Maize South was unable to get the ball across the timeline before the buzzer sounded.
”It was big for our kids to win a close game,” said Hays High Head Coach Len Melvin. “We are now in the sweet sixteen. I watch a lot of March Madness and know crazy things can happen. There is no doubt that Salina Central is the best team in the State. We get a chance to play another game and you play them for a reason. We are excited for the opportunity to go play.”
Maize South’s Jenna Uehling led all scorers with 13 points.
Aleyia Ruder led Hays with a total of 11 points.Maize South ends their season with 11 wins and 10 losses.
Hays will travel to face the number one seed Salina Central Lady Mustangs on Saturday night.
