Derby holds on to edge out Campus in nail-biting playoff game
WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Maybe one of the wildest games of the year so far was this 6A sub-state game between fifth seed Derby and 12th seed Campus.
Campus came back from a double-digit deficit at the half. Kaason Thomas got the steal and went coast to coast for the layup. The Colts lead 35-34.
Derby regained a small lead, but Zion Young gave Campus a one-point lead over the Panthers, 42-41.
Derby kept fighting, Jameer Clemons pulled up for the mid-range shot that put the Panthers back on top, 43-42.
It was a back-and-forth competition for the whole fourth quarter, Andrell Burton, Jr. threw up the corner ball and caught all net. Colts jumped out to a six-point advantage with less than three minutes to play.
Under a minute to go, Panthers trailed as Kaeson Fisher-Brown lobbed the ball up to get the 56--55 Derby lead.
In the end, the Panthers get the tough 57—55 win, ending Campus’s season.
Derby moves to 14-7 and will host Manhattan on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Derby’s gym.
