Dodge City stuns Hays High at the buzzer
HAYS, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The visiting Dodge City Lady Red Demons hit a layup at the buzzer to defeat the Hays Lady Indians 41-40.
Both teams entered the evening ranked ninth by the KBCA for their respective classes, 6A for Dodge City and 5A for Hays.
They also remembered the close finish with Hays winning on a last-second shot in their previous game in Dodge City.
Hays started the game with a dominant first quarter. They led 7-1 at the end of the quarter. Dodge City’s only point came from an Amaya Perez free throw. They did not sink a single field goal in the opening quarter.
Thirty seconds into the second quarter, Dodge City got their first field goal from Camree Johnson. Johnson intercepted a pass and took it in for a layup.
The Lady Red Demon offense came alive in the second quarter scoring 19 points. Hays was held to 11 points to trail 20-18 at halftime.
The third quarter was a tighter affair on both sides with the two sides combining for 12 points, eight for Dodge City, and four for Hays. Also in the third quarter, Lady Red Demon Amaya Perez fell to the court in pain. She was helped off and did not return to the game.
Going into the final quarter, the Lady Red Demons led 28-22. At the 3:24 to-go mark, Hays narrowed the Lady Red Demon lead to 34-33.
With 1:53 left in the game, Hays’s Jersey Johnson was fouled by Camree Johnson. The Lady Indian made a free throw to tie the game at 36-36.
Seven seconds later, a Dodge City turnover led to Jillyan Sheldon making a layup to put Hays up 38-36.
Easha Potts drained a three to put Dodge City up 39-38 with 56 seconds to go.
After a series of turnovers and timeouts, Hays called their final one with 10.4 seconds remaining. Dodge City’s Becca Unruh fouled Molly Martin with 7.8 seconds to go. Martin stepped to the line for a one-and-one with her team down a point.
She made the first. The Lady Red Demons took a timeout at the point. After the full timeout, Molly Martin stepped to the line and sank the second free throw. Hays now led 40-39.
The ball made it down the court to Dodge City’s end and went out of bounds with 1.9 seconds to go. Becca Unruh inbounded the ball to Camree Johnson who was open under the basket. Johnson put up the shot and it went in as the buzzer sounded. Dodge City wins 41-40.
“Coach reminded us about revenge, we lost against them last Friday,” said Camree Johnson. “That was the only thing on my mind was revenge. It was nothing but a team win, I can’t say I did it all myself. Becca saw me open and then we just scored and celebrated.”
“I told them to remain calm,” said Dodge City Head Coach Kelly Snodgrass of her message to her team during the fourth quarter timeouts. “We talked about the situation. Overall pleased with how the girls responded. Anytime they made a careless error, they made something happen on the offensive end.”
Camree Johnson led all scorers with 15 points. Easha Potts added 12 for Dodge City.
Hays’s Molly Martin led her team with 10 points.
