NICKERSON, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The Nickerson girls came into tonight ranked number four in class 3A, and tonight they proved why they earned that high ranking. The Panthers took down the Pratt Greenbacks 71-42.

Arizona State commit Ava Jones was a force in the paint all night. She finished with 21 points.

“She’s just been a solid player. She just really cleans up the boards for us and it gets us in transition a lot,” Nickerson Head Coach Jon Mclean said. “Just very skilled, great kid. Just does a lot of great things for our team.”

Jones wasn’t the only Panther in the scoring column. Nickerson also had Kalyse Abernathy (15) and Kieryn Ontjes (14) finish in double figures.

Jones said she was proud of her teammates’ effort tonight.

“It was a great team win. We all worked together, we were clicking tonight,” she said.

The Panthers dropped from class 4A to 3A this year. They hope to make noise in their new classification’s state tournament in a couple of weeks.

“We are so excited,” Jones said. “We are always excited this time of year. We just have to keep working.”

The Panthers have one more regular season game left before sub-state begins. They take on Hillsboro at home on Tuesday night.
